Alpha Lipoic acid (ALA) is a nootropic supplement widely used to support brain function is found in plants, used in food, and even focus energy drinks. Alpha Lipoic acid (ALA) is also naturally occurring antioxidant made by the body. It works from the cellular level in the body, turning glucose into energy. In healthy bodies, the ALA produced is enough for normal bodily functions. ALA, just like other antioxidants, fight “free radicals” in the body. These are waste products from normal bodily functions that when in excess, cause harmful chemical reactions that damage cells, making it harder to ward off infections.
Where does it come from?
AS already mentioned above, the body produces enough ALA, provided it is healthy. However, there are plant sources of ALA such as yeast, spinach, broccoli, potatoes and organ meats such as heart and liver. Even though eating these foods is still advisable, ALA produced from food does not seem to produce a notable increase in the level of free ALA in the body.
ALA is also available as a supplement in the form of capsules. People take these with the intent to improve a number of health conditions, though there has not been scientific evidence supporting this. Research has shown that for every oral dose of an ALA supplement, about 30-40% of it is absorbed by the body.
Uses
Alpha Lipoic Acid can be found as an ingredient in nootropic supplements. Because it easily passes into the brain, ALA has been thought to protect brain and nerve tissue. It is taken as a brain supplement because it is thought to decrease brain problems that are caused by free radical damage such as dementia. There has been no scientific evidence to support this but that has not hindered sales of the product.
ALA has also been praised for its anti-aging properties. It works in the body by shielding and preventing the crossing and linking of proteins. It is believed that the linking of proteins is the cause of loss of elasticity of the skin and also many immune disorders that are related to aging. ALA stimulates skin renewal by activating factors which get rid of damaged collagen. ALA can also be found in many focus supplements. It's effect seem to be more pronounced in increasing brain function.
